Yes, it is recommended to perform Tahnik for the newborn. Tahnik means chewing a date and putting it into the child's mouth, then rubbing the child's palate with the date or something sweet like honey or raisins, so that some of it reaches the newborn's stomach.

نعم يستحبُّ تحنيك المولود، والتَّحنيك: هو مضغ التَّمر ووضعه في فم الصَّبي، ثمَّ ندلك حنك الصَّبي بالتَّمر أو بشيء حلو كالعسل أو الزَّبيب، فيصل إلى جوف المولود شيء منه.
